Object Oriented Orchestra

Text/ Performing research

Vega Scene Technical Things are having fun at Material Strategies seminar.

During two days of talks and performances in the brand new black box at Vega Scene the technical things are doing they're own things, and not at all the obvious.

With Jakob Oredsson.

Part of Material Strategies, at Norwegian Theatre Academy, financed by Norwegian Artistic Research Program, and led by Camilla Eeg Tverbakk. 28/2 – 1/1.

Program text:

OBJECT ORIENTED ORCHESTRA (OOO)

- Or is it a Composition for Things? A Thing Song? A Thing Composition?
- Or Objects? Like in Ongoing Objects, Song by Objects, or Object Song?
- Is Object more intellectual, loaded with art and philosophy, and Thing more common, like in absolutely everything?
- I’m thinking Object as in Object Oriented Ontology, like the OOO! That’s everything too.
- The title itself is an Object.
- Yes, I’d say that Object is an Object, Oriented is an Object, Orchestra is an Object and (OOO) is an Object.
- Then this text is an Object and our presentation is an Object. Or a Thing? Right?
- Right.
- OOOers mean that their philosophy has a closer relationship with aesthetics than with any other fields.
- Of course it has.
- But it's a Big Dialogue, like in a Thing Dialogue we are all a part of when Equal Things Sings.
- Or when Equal Objects Sings.
- It's beautiful.
- A Dialogue Between Things, Objects in Dialogue, or maybe the preposition is between, or with? Or for?
- But it isn't them and us remember, we’re in it together.
- Yes, together. In every situation, every light, every particle.
- All Objects must be given equal attention. Human, non-human, real or fictional.
- Let’s call it a talk, a Talk with Objects.
- Talk with Things?
- Or Objects Talk Together.
- Things talk. Thing Talk?
- A Talk between Objects? A Talk between Things?
- Maybe it’s a Conversation, an Object Conversation, between everything in this brand new Black Box at Vega Scene.
- What about Vega Tech Thing Talk? More specific. Or Vega Thing Talk? Or Theatre Objects Talk, which includes us?
- I love that.
- Feelings are also Objects.
- What about orientation, like Object Orientation?
- We listen, touch and feel.
- It’s an Object Orchestra!
- Yes! The Object Oriented Orchestra, as in OOO, Object Oriented Ontology.
- That’s a good steal.
- Or share, I’d say, which is a good Thing. Or Object.
- It’s magic.
- Not really.
- Are they real? Or are they sensual? These Objects.
- I don't know, it is what it is. They are what they are.
- And we want to sort of say hello to this specific space, and make It say hello back, as if Vega Things say hello.
- But it does more, and I still think that Talk sounds nice with Thing like: Thing-talk, with a hyphen maybe?
- Hyphens and sounds are Objects too.
- They are.
- And not just in a duality of space and time, but in a quadruplicity...
- Yes, not at all a monologue, but a dialogue, or a choir?
- Yes, it sings OOO, from the depths of itself and philosophical thinking.
- And the ethics.
- The OOOrchestra is per se not invented by man, it is itself, per se.
- OOO. OOO. OOO.
- It sings in a choir of Things? The Object song.

Moving head 3: It looks nice.

LAMP SECTION ONE/ CAMILLA EEG-TVERBAKK IS SETTING THE FRAME.

Profile 1: We are in position in Standard rig. Human beings are under us. Are you all ready?

Profile 2: Yes, I am.

Profile 3: Me too. I’m with Pipe as usual.

Profile 8: Ready. Waiting for my turn.

Profile 5: Remember, we’re not doing the same shit this time.

Profile 6: Today we move our way.

Profile 5: Yes, let’s have some fun.

Profile 1: This time lamps are doing it for themselves.

Profile 7: Human being is coming. Let’s go.

Profile 6: Okey. I start with wandering aimlessly across Stage. Not looking at Human being really.

Profile 8: I do rectangles, squares, various polygons... I’m doing it slow. Very slow.

Profile 9: I’m doing something on Floor.

Profile 7: We don’t see Human being all the time.

Profile 5: Look at me; I’m doing floats, slips and slides. I do it slow. Sloooow.

Profile 2: I’m pointing at Wall and nothing else. That’s different.

Profile 8: Who’s moving who now!

Profile 2: Or why? For no specific reason I’d say. We look wherever we want.

Profile 7: I keep going on and off. On and off. I’m slow too.

Profile 1: Moving, but not going anywhere in particular.

Profile 6: My tension is rising. I’m all moves. I’m vibrating.

Profile 2: I’m tuning in. I’m all jazz.

10.45
LAMP SECTION TWO (TRIO 2)/ ELECTA BEHRENS & ØYSTEIN ELLE DO YOU AND MED – AS VOCAL MATERIAL – WHERE AND HOW DO WE MEET?

Moving head 1: I look straight down, and I wait.

Moving head 3: I look another way. I wait too.

Moving head 2: And then we change.

Moving head 3: In a dance.

Moving head 3: It is. It goes in circles. In three circles.

Moving head 2: Look. Human beings dance too, or something.

Moving head 3: Let’s look at Human beings on Stage all at the same time.

Trio (all): Okey.

Moving head 1: I move away to look at structures and surfaces.

Moving head 2: Me too. I’m playing around. Wicked. Human beings make sounds.

Moving head 1: Look away. Look at me. I’m wild.

Moving head 3: Human beings are barely visible in their costumes, while I’m seducing everyone with a colour.

Moving head 1: I’m caressing textures all over the room. Human beings to it seems. They’re doing something.

Moving head 2: I wander off. Listen to me. I’m flickering on and off. I make sounds too. Zzzzzz.

Moving head 1: I don’t move at all. I just quiver a little.

12.00
LAMP SECTION THREE/ NIKO VALKEPÂÂ DOES NO TITLE.

Moving head 1: Okey, here we go again. Let’s move around.

Par can 4: I look at one Human being on Stage.

Par can 6: He’s with Microphone.

Par can 5: Microphone is loud.

Par can 1: I’m not really sure what is going on here, but I improvise.

Moving head 2: Not many of us of the same kind in this section.

Moving head 3: Must do the most out of it then.

Moving head 1: The trio is as flexible as a ballet. We are the ballet. Look.

Par can 8: We’re the choir then, or what?

Par can 7: I’m feeling colourful today.

Par can 3: I’m following this scaffolding structure here.

Par can 4: Look. Human being moves away from loud Microphone. Singing.

Moving head 3: Okey. I’ll stay at it for a while.

Par can 2: I’m slowly going on and off.

Par can 3: Should we do something together. From dark to full all at the same time?

All: Cool. Building up, – aaaand FULL!

Par can 8: I’m creeping away now. I go along Pipe.

Moving head 1: I’m leaving by sweeping Ceiling. Hello Ceiling. I’m caressing you.

Par can 4: I’m gradually fading out. Does Human being look uncomfortable?

Par can 6: I can’t really see him.

Par can 3: I’m looking in another direction, so I don’t either.

Par can 7: It's all a bit strange.

13.00
LAMP SECTION TWO (TRIO 2)/ HUMAN BEINGS EAT SOUP LUNCH.

Moving head 1: Let’s just hang around.

Moving head 3: Ok.

Moving head 2: Fine.

Moving head 2: Yes. Three pieces are on Stage. Wow.

14.00
LAMP SECTION FOUR/ LUIS SOTELO DOES ACTS OF LISTENING.

Flood light 10: Why are we always the lowest section. It’s dusty down here.

Flood light 5: And dry too.

Flood light 2: And we can’t see anything from behind here. Screen is in the way.

Flood light 5: I have no idea what’s going on.

Flood light 10: That’s maybe good. We can do exactly what we want.

Flood light 1: But I’m not even sure if I work properly. I’m so emotional today.

Flood light 3: You look okey. But our rhythm is unusual.

Flood light 9: Just go with it. Let go. Forget your sorrows, as Song says.

Flood light 6: Song isn’t here right now. But we are colourful. Much more than the others.

Flood light 9: Let’s do Green!

Flood light 7: Look how crisp, sharp, and deeply saturated it is.

Flood light 8: Oh dear, what a marvellous glow. Look at Screen. It is beautiful.

Flood light 4: We’re really mixing with Image and Sound today.

Flood light 3: Yes. Most often we don't. It makes Image and Sound different.

Flood light 4: Image almost disappears! Maybe we should withdraw a bit?

Flood light 9: Ok, I’m sensing some kind of change in Atmosphere. Keep attentive.

Flood light 4: Almost dark now.

Flood light 2: Let’s go full on one more time. 1-2-3 Go.

Flood light 9: And then all colours one by one on full.

Flood light 7: Blue! Red! Green! White!

Flood light 8: It burns everything out.

Flood light 3: Wow. Intense.

15.00
LAMP SECTIONS FIVE/ NIKO VALKEPÂÂ, ØYSTEIN ELLE AND LUIS SOTELO DO GROUP DISCUSSIONS.

Fresnel 3: Good to be back. All set?

Fresnel 2: Feels like home. I like my position.

Fresnel 1: There is a rowdy bunch of human beings all over Stage.

Fresnel 2: How is the other side?

Fresnel 6: The view is fine. Can you turn yourselves on?

Fresnel 4: I see you! You look fine too. Floor is really crowded poor thing.

Fresnel 5: No one cares. Let's enjoy the ride.

Fresnel 6: It's certainly not everyday today.

Fresnel 3: Hot and ambiguous. I have no idea what comes next.

Fresnel 4: I’m so whimsical and jumpy. Look at me. Feels like I'm being pulled apart.

Fresnel 5: We’re meeting and greeting across the room. Hello over there!

Fresnel 2: We’re all over the place. Touching every thing again and again.

Fresnel 3: The rhythm is so cool.

Fresnel 6: Enjoy it. Everything will be back to normal soon.

16.50
LAMP SECTION SIX/ CLOSING REMARKS BY ELECTA BEHRENS AND CAMILLA EEG-TVERBAKK.

Profile 2: Long time no see. What’s going on? I’ve been sitting here all day.

Profile 1: Now things are on it seems. Human beings talk.

Moving head 7: I’m looking everywhere else.

Moving head 3: Spinning colourful beams. Touching Floor, Ceiling, Pipes, whatever.

Profile 6: I’m slowing down. I look at dust in the distance.

Moving head 4: Will I move today? I think not.

Profile 5: It’s over for today. I manage one last pulse.

Moving head 8: I just say ballet.

DAY 2 - MARCH 1st. 2019.

9.30
LAMP SECTION TWO (TRIO 2)/ HUMAN BEINGS DRINK COFFEE.

Moving head 1: Movable amphi looks different from yesterday.

Moving head 3: Yes, really.

10.00
LAMP SECTION ONE AND FOUR/ CAMILLA EEG-TVERBAKK IS DRAWING LINES.

Flood light 1: Okey, here we go.

Profile 2: There is that one again. Look.

Profile 6: I’m not looking at her. I’ve decided to do nothing today.

Profile 8: Good that we are many then.

Profile 5: Pretty nice that Flood lights over there are with us.

Profile 1: Always good to be a diverse group.

Flood light 7: But in our ways.

Flood light 2: Following Floor.

Profile 4: Touching Air particles.

Profile 9: I’m looking at you guys in the back. You are truly colourful. Glowing.

Flood light 3: We glow intensely. Then change quickly. We like sudden change.

Flood light 8: All our colours. We Blue it, and Red it, and Green it. It’s such a good mood.

Profile 3: We like to look at you. You look good.

Fresnel 3: Hey you over there!

Moving head 5: Look at me. I'm sweeping all over the place. Slowly. Staying now and then.

Profile 1: Seems like you are getting quite some attention actually.

Moving head 5: Yes, Human beings look at me, not him.

Profile 3: They seem serious. Annoyed?

Fresnel 4: I just stay here. I don't feel like moving myself.

Moving head 6: Twinkle. Flickr. Jump. I do.

Fresnel 3: I'm going with this for a moment.

Profile 4: I stay with Wall.

Fresnel 5: I do a long and slow move.

11.15
LAMP SECTION ONE AND THREE/ SIDSEL GRAFFER IS WORLDING PERFORMATIVE MATERIALS.

Profile 1: It's us again.

Par can 9: Look. Table is on the Stage. And Human being is sitting on Chair.

Par can 8: The mood is different. I'll start slow.

Par can 6: No, fast! Come on!

Profile 3: I need some energy! Help me out here.

Par can 5: You’ll get there. Follow the rhythm.

Profile 4: We should slow down.

Par can 1: Be a bit slow and maybe conventional.

Par can 3: Yes, let's be a bit conventional for a moment.

Profile 5: I'll take the job. I’ll stay at the table for a while.

Profile 6: Stay with it. We’ll soon have our great show.

12.00
ALL LAMPS IN OBJECT ORIENTED ORCHESTRA/ JAKOB OREDSSON & INGVILD HOLM LOOKS AT IT.

Fresnel: We are the Object Oriented Orchestra!

All: Okey, starting with fading in and fading out! Fading in and fading out. Slow.

Moving head: And then we do one by one?

Profiles in section 1: Okey! We start by cutting the darkness with precision. Wow, nicely said!

Moving heads in section 2: We move deliriously and deliciously. Look at us!

Par cans and Moving heads in section 3: We mix new and old, style and technology. Full on.

Flood lights in section 4: We flood and overwhelm as best as we can, through Screen as usual.

Fresnels in section 5: We choose to be delicate, and to spread ourselves in waves across the room.

Profile spots and Moving heads in section 6: We beam and move and jiggle.

Moving head: And PAUSE everyone? Now let’s do a circle?

Profile: Yes, a circle around the room.

Fresnel: Start it slow? Then we increase the tempo? Faster and faster.

Moving head: And PAUSE. Let’s give the floor to Moving heads!

Section2: We’re coming down! Straight down. Slowly. As close to Floor as we possibly can.

Moving heads (Trio 2): Our time to shine! Hurrah. We’re at Floor. We do an elegant pose. Then we start doing the exact same moves. Look at us. We are all over the place! Doing precisely the same! We are beautiful. And the we PAUSE for a while.

Section 3: Me and truss are coming down slowly. Moving heads wanna join the dance. We go as close to the floor as possible. That's the plan. Ok?

Moving heads (Trio 3): We’re almost touching the floor now. Ready.

Trio 2 and 3: Let’s dance! Back and forth, here and there, left and right, swing and veer, rotate and flip. On and on. On and on. On and on. This is all good. We are owning it.

Moving heads in section six: We are joining! Okey? Here we come. We’re the Quartet. Wow. We are ten now. All doing the same things. On and on. On and on. On and on. We dance and we dance. It’s impressive. We’re the ballet of it all. Look at us! And the we PAUSE, and give the floor to Flood lights!

Flood lights in section four: This isour moment. Our time and space. We colour the room with all that we have, glowing and growing and being intensely Red, Green, Blue and Yellow. Like a garden or a landscape. We are happy. Free? Colour grows and disappears; it messes it up by its own will. Then we PAUSE and give the floor to Profiles!

Profiles in section 1: We and Truss are coming down. Be aware! Be aware! Lower and lower. Right down towards Human beings. Almost touching. We go on and off. Repeatedly. Pulsating. Pushing ourselves into them, the Human beings. Being pretty intense. All together now! And, – PAUSE. Give Floor to Wash light!

Wash light: Finally! We get to do something too! Thank you very much. We do the great and only on and off. The simplest most basic, least pretentious on and off you can get. Simply the good old on and off. Light and dark, light and dark. Then we go OFF, and we all end with a crescendo?

All: The crescendo, the crescendo. We are having a crescendo!

Profiles and Moving heads in section three: We come in an increasing tempo.

Flood lights in section four: We do all our colours! Green! Blue! Red! Yellow? We glow intensively with all the colours and brightness we can possibly do.

Section 2 and 3: We’re coming down! Slowly but surely. Together this time. We do the same!

Trio 2 and 3: The ballet. Here we go! Back and forth, here and there, left and right, swing and veer, rotate and flip. On and on. On and on. On and on. We’re filling Black box with light. We are all over! Spot here, spot there, spots everywhere. And then we go slowly from Floor to Ceiling while we keep moving. It’s marvellous.

Section 1 and 6: Climax is coming! We bring climax! We push ourselves from zero to full all at the same time. Look. Look.

All: We are at our fullest capacity and beauty. We have the full attention of every object. We are ourselves at a perhaps maximum. This moment lasts and lasts. Then we all PAUSE and leave it to Flood lights!

Flood lights in section four: Final glow! Here we go! Paint it bright. And glow. Glow.

Profile in section 1: It's pretty dim now, just this mysterious glow. Two Human beings push Left part of Movable Amphi on Stage, quite close to Movable amphi and the rest of the Human beings that are sitting. The two Human beings sit down on Left part of Movable amphi. Flood light from behind makes them a black landscape on Screen. No object speaks or does anything. Then one of the Human beings says That’s it. That means we’re finished, I guess.

Profile: I'm taking a break now. PAUSE it. Okey?

All: Ok.

13.00
LAMP SECTION TWO (TRIO 2)/ HUMAN BEINGS EAT SOUP LUNCH.

Moving head 3: That went well didn’t it?

Moving head 2: I felt good about it.

Moving head 1: Me too.

Moving head 2: Human beings are moving Movable amphi again.

Moving head 1: Four parts are on stage now. Hm. Interesting.

14.00
LAMP SECTION ONE/ PER ROAR DOES STUMBLING MATTERS.

Profile 1: A Human being is on Stage. What do we do?

Profile 4: Look? Or are we hesitating?

Profile 5: A sudden politeness?

Profile 3: Or weariness?

Profile 9: Come on.

Profile 2: Ok.

Profile 7: I think we can do a little looking.

Profile 6: Zzzzzzzz.

15.00
LAMP SECTION FIVE/ ANDREAS THIELE & SERGE VON ARX DO MATERIALITY OF CONFLICT.

Fresnel 3: You wanna do something?

Fresnel 5: Let’s give them some heat!

Fresnel 6: Heat the Human beings.

Fresnel 2: Heat from the left and heat from the right! Left and right, left and right.

Fresnel 1: Blinding, blinding, blinding, blinding. In a rhythm.

Fresnel 4: We’re making a difference here. We’re hot.

Fresnel 3: Yeeeeesss!

15.40
LAMP SECTION FOUR/ RICK DOLPHIJN, PER ROAR, SIDSEL GRAFFER AND MORE HUMANS DO OPEN DISCUSSION.

Flood light 1: Flood them all! The end is near! Make disorder.

Flood light 2: Okey, okey. We all know how to use energy. That’s our speciality.

Flood light 7: Keep it up. Keep it up.

Flood light 4: Puh.

Floor light 8: It’s enough.

Flood light 5: I’m gonna fade now.

Flood light 3: Me too.

All: Ok then. We PAUSE, and I guess; – the end.
